The VA Business Loan Is an SBA Fee Waiver

Veterans have earned distinct advantages when seeking capital. Understanding where those advantages truly lie is the first step in putting them to work for your business.

I talk to a lot of veterans. It is one of the best parts of my job. The discipline and operational focus that come from military service are incredible assets for running a business. So when a veteran asks me about getting a VA business loan, I understand exactly where the question comes from. The VA home loan program is one of the most powerful financial tools available, and it is natural to assume a similar program exists for commercial capital.

It is a logical assumption, but it leads to a dead end. There is no such thing as a business loan directly from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA’s mission is focused on benefits like healthcare, education, and housing. It does not have a division set up to underwrite and service commercial debt for a trucking company or a new restaurant. The risk profile and documentation are entirely different worlds.

This is not bad news. It just means the real benefit lies in a different place. The advantage for veteran business owners comes through the Small Business Administration, the SBA. The SBA has several programs designed to make capital more accessible, and it offers a significant incentive for veterans. For certain [/sba-loans], like the SBA Express program, the upfront guarantee fee is waived entirely for businesses that are majority-owned by a veteran.

This is a major financial benefit. The guarantee fee is what the SBA charges the lender to back a portion of the loan, and the lender typically passes that cost on to the borrower. Removing it can save you thousands of dollars at closing. But it is important to see this for what it is: a fee waiver on an SBA loan, not a separate loan product from the VA.

You are not applying to the VA. You are applying for an SBA-backed loan through a bank, credit union, or other approved lender. Your application will be judged on the same criteria as any other SBA application. Underwriters will look at your personal credit, the business’s cash flow, your experience in the industry, and the overall strength of your business plan. The fundamentals of getting approved do not change. Your veteran status provides a powerful cost advantage on an excellent government program, but it does not change the underwriting requirements of that program.

Knowing this distinction is critical. It focuses your search on the right path and sets the correct expectations. Instead of chasing a product that doesn't exist, you can focus on preparing a strong application for an [/sba-loans] and ensuring your lender correctly applies the veteran fee waiver. It is a detail that a good broker will handle as a matter of course, but it is one you should be aware of from the start.

The path to capital is there. For veterans, it just has a very valuable toll taken off the price of admission. The FundXpanse desk knows how to make sure that benefit is applied correctly.
