Your Bank Is a Product Not a Market

The search for capital often starts at the bank you know. But a single bank has its own products, not the entire market's.

When I was running my own companies, the first place I thought to go for capital was the bank where I had my checking account. It’s a natural instinct. You have a relationship there. They see your deposits. It feels like the path of least resistance.

This is the starting point for so many owners. They begin what they might call a Chase business loan search, or a Wells Fargo search, or whoever holds their primary accounts. It feels familiar and safe. And for a small slice of businesses that fit a very specific profile, it works out perfectly. But for most, it is the beginning of a frustrating education in what a bank actually is.

A large, depository bank is not the market. It is a single, very large store in that market. It has its own products on its own shelves, designed to serve its ideal customer. That customer profile is defined by a rigid credit box: a set of non-negotiable rules about credit scores, time in business, industry, cash flow, and collateral. If your business fits neatly inside that box, the process can be smooth. If any part of your story falls outside those lines, the answer is a simple, and often final, no.

The person you speak with at the bank, your business banker or relationship manager, works for the bank. Their job is to sell the bank’s products to customers who qualify for them. They are not incentivized, or even able, to tell you about a better-fitting product at a different institution.

My job is the opposite. I don’t work for any single lender. I work for the business owner. My role is to understand the complete story of your business, the nuance that doesn't show up in a credit score. I take that story and translate it into the language of underwriting. Then, I identify the specific lenders in the broader market whose credit appetite matches your situation. This might be a lender that specializes in your industry, like /industries/trucking, or one that has a unique structure for /working-capital that fits your cash flow cycle.

A denial from your primary bank doesn't mean your business is not fundable. It usually just means you knocked on the wrong door. The danger in going it alone is that you might knock on five more wrong doors, accumulating hard credit inquiries and wasting valuable time, before you find the right one. That process can damage your credit and your morale.

Working with a broker is about efficiency and strategy. We use a single application and a soft credit pull to diagnose your file. From there, we build a strategy to approach a curated group of lenders who we know are actively funding businesses like yours. We are filtering the market for you, protecting your time and your credit profile from the trial-and-error of applying blind.

The search for capital is not about finding a loan. It is about finding the right capital partner and the right structure for your specific need. The right solution is out there, but it is rarely sitting on the shelf at the first place you look.

The FundXpanse desk is built to manage that search for our clients.
